Description: Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (Blue Waterlily) is members of the the Waterlily family (Nympheaeceae). William Aiton's Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 3, p. 294 recorded that Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (Blue Waterlily) is a native of the Cape of Good Hope was introduced to Britain in 1792. We now know Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (Blue Waterlily) is native to North Africa along the Nile and south through central, East, and Southern Africa. Other formerly accepted botanical names for the Blue Waterlily include Nymphaea caerulea and Nymphaea capensis.
